Legal Question in Immigration Law in New York

Green Card Sponsorship

I've got married last week and now in the process of applying for a Green Card. I have 2 questions regarding the financial requirement of the sponsorship.

1.) My husband will be my sponsor, but his 2008 income was under the poverty guideline. If we open a joint checking and combine our money, which will be about $40,000, can we count this for him to meet the financial requirements of sponsorship?

2.) I've been working as a H1B worker in US for 2 years. My income is eligible to be used to meet the requirements.

However, in the I-864 form, it says that if we combine my(immigrant's) incomes to meet the requirement I have to keep the same income source. Does it mean I have to keep the same job? For how long? Because I want to leave that job within the year. So would it be a huge problem if I quit after getting a Green Card.

I would appreciate your help.

Re: Green Card Sponsorship

As for your status as a H1B worker in the US, your source of income has to remain the same until you are permitted to work elsewhere when you get a SSN# and a temporary green card.

In other words, yes you have to keep the same job until your status is changed by the immigration service.
