Would this qualifiy me for a "U" visa?

Late 2006 a man at a church properting to be an immigration personanel took $5000 from me and said he would obtain for me a work permit. He said I'd hear from him in 3 months. However,3 mths passed and I had no word. I saw him not long after and he said he was shot and was experiencing som difficulty. The next thing I knew a FBI officer was contacted me and asked if I was willing to cooperate so they could build a case against this man. I did and he was convoct and jailed in 2008. He was released last August on probation after a 36mths sentence.

At the time as an international student, the incident severely impacted me as I had difficulty registering for school that spring semester. the whole incident left me in a financial bind and I had to receive counseling from my local church pastor. Chruch members gossiped about me and it leftme feeling scorned.

Yes you may be eligible for a U visa. The U-Visa is designed for noncitizen crime victims who (1) have suffered substantial physical or mental abuse from criminal activity; (2) have information regarding the criminal activity; (3) assist government officials in the investigation or prosecution of such criminal activity; and (4) the criminal activity violated US law or occurred in the United States (including Indian country and military installations) or the territories and possessions of the United States.

If a law enforcement official is willing to certify that you were helpful in the investigation of this crime and you can adequately demonstrate you have suffered mental abuse, you may be able to obtain a U visa. The U visa cap has not been reached this year but is expected to be reached in September this year.
