Legal Question in Immigration Law in New York

re-entry to u.s.

My friend has had a green card for 15 years. He got a felony in 1993 and served six months. If he wants to go home to Trinidad will he be able to return to the US or will the felony prevent this?

You should have an attorney review the previous criminal record to determine immigration consequences of that felony. It is hard to tell without knowing the crime involved.

This is a complex question. While your friend may have been convicted of a state "felony," it is critical to determine whether this conviction would constitute an "aggravated felony" or "crime involving moral turpitude" or any other serious immigration offense. You should definitely have your friend consult with experience immigration attorneys before traveling.

We have extensive experience with immigration law including criminal deportation defense. Should your friend wish to consult with us, feel free to pass on our office contact information.
