Legal Question in Immigration Law in New York

I'm doing research for a feature film and I wonder if a legal profession could help me create some legal realism. If a Canadian in the US on a student visa was booked by police for possession of marijuana, what would happen to her legal status? What if she was *selling* small amounts of marijuana? Would the penalty be much graver if she was booked for cocaine possession? Thank you in advance for your advice!
