Legal Question in Immigration Law in New York
shoplifting and immagration
I've been a permanent resident for 22 years. I made the worst mistake when I was 20 years old by shoplifting. I was arrested and plead guilty to petit larceny. I am now applying for citzenship and I am scared of what may happen. Will I be deported? Will i be rejected citzenship? Please Advise

Re: shoplifting and immagration
You need good moral character for 5 yrs to apply for citizenship. Based on the facts you have provided, if you were sentenced for 6 months or less then you fall within the exception of petty offences. However, that being said it will be advisable to consult an attorney or have an attorney represent you.
Good Luck!
