Legal Question in Immigration Law in New York
My stepfather lost his mother today and needs to travel urgently to our country, Guatemala, for the funeral to be held soon. Unfortunately, he noticed 2 weeks ago that his passport had expired. He has married to an American citizen for nearly 5 years now and is a permanent resident. What can be done today so that he is able to travel for the service and come back? Are there any special amendments or loopholes?
We'd all greatly appreciate an answer in this time of bereavement.

Your step-father should contact the Guatemalan Consulate to obtain a new passport to travel.
Although you stated he has a green card, he cannot leave the US without an updated passport.
Your step-father should tell the consulate that its an emergency, and, therefore, he needs the passport to travel to a funeral.
