Legal Question in Immigration Law in New York
Need Urgent Advice
Hi! I'm an unfortunate man who is out of status here from last few years. My visa has expired but I didn't go back to my country cause of money matters. I have earned good money here working on different jobs. I want to know if I can buy a home in NY? A few people have told me that I can and it might help me in my immigration case that I own a home here. Would you please help me in this and let me know if this is a good decision and if I can really buy a home or not, cause I'm out of status right now. I'll appreciate any advice.
Thank you!

Re: Need Urgent Advice
Unfortunately, by itself ownership of property in the U.S. is unlikely to be of any help to you. It may be one of many factors in certain immigration application/proceedings but it is not going to provide you with an avenue of obtaining lawful permanent residency. Not knowing your specific situation I cannot offer any advice but there are generally very few options available for people who overstay their non-immigrant visa and work without employment authorization.
However, apart from immigration considerations, if you wanted to purchase real property in the U.S., it should be possible in principle as there are no restrictions on home ownership by non-citizens or non-resident aliens.
