That's a very good question. I am not sure about how the other states do it, but in NEW YORK, you can find an attorney's verification by going to the NYS unified court system's website and typing in their name. This website gives you an attorney's contact information, as well as if they are in "good standing" (meaning that they have registered and aren't delinquent, etc).
