No, you are not. If he was driving the car and impaled you, there would be coverage under the auto policy. But the policy covers negligent driving and not negligent repair performance.
If the car was being worked on at the friend's home, there might be coverage under the friend's homeowner's or renter's insurance. That's the first place I would look.

Probably not in NY. The insurance arises out of the use and operation of the car...not the repair to it.
