Legal Question in Insurance Law in New York

What should I do if I found a life insurance policy for my Grandmother but the Union seems to have gone out of business. She worked for Ideal Toy Company for about 19 years? Any info you can give would be appreciated? My name is Diane Mullahey at [email protected]

Call the NY Insurance Department to see if there is a successor company which may be obligated to pay on the policy.

I agree with the prior answer. When a carrier goes bankrupt or out of business, the Insurance Department usually makes another carrier(s) take over the policies. An additional issue, however, is the premiums. Did your grandmother continue to pay the premiums? Was it a whole life policy, where the dividends were paying the premiums? If not one of these 2, then the policy may have lapsed for non-payment of premiums. Also, life insurance policies commonly terminate upon a certain age and cannot be renewed. So, depending on your grandmother's age when she passed, the policy could have lapsed and not been renewable.
