Legal Question in Intellectual Property in New York

buying film/character rights.

I am a fledgling screen writer who is interested in writing a sequel to a movie that came out in 1981; the movie was a flop, and the studio clearly has no intention to ever revive the character. Who should I contact about obtaining the rights? The original writer? The studio? If the studio, who/what department should I contact?

Check IMDB and determine who owns the copyrights and trademarks -- then you negotiate.
