Legal Question in Intellectual Property in New York

copyrights and publishing

I am a photographer and want to publish a book of my pictures and quotes from famous people. Most of my quotes come from quotation books. What type of permission do I need to use these quotes? Thank you.

Re: copyrights and publishing

The answer to your question depends in part on where you got the quotes. By that, I mean are they coming from ancient Chinese or Renaissance philosophers, or are we talking about "Quotable Star Trek" by Jill Sherwin? Simple attribution would likely be enough for most quotes, but if the quotes themselves come from a copyrighted source you might need consent or a license.
