Legal Question in Intellectual Property in New York
If I invent a simple product and start selling it, but can't afford to patent the product, can someone copy my design, patent it, and prevent me from selling the item that I designed in the first place?

Not exactly. But I would first make sure you have an invention that will qualify for patent protection to begin with. You have not, but you may be able top protect yourself through copyright and trademark law.
