Legal Question in Intellectual Property in New York
Permission to write story about someone deceased
I would like to write a non-fiction
piece about a group of people, most
who have passed away. Do I need
permission from their estates to write
this piece? What if there is no
estate? What if I include a photo? It
could be a stock photo.

Re: Permission to write story about someone deceased
Under almost every circumstance no permission would be required.

I agree with Mr. Browde, but you will need to have an attorney vet your manuscript before most publishers will accept it.
