Changing Jobs and Unemployment

I am currently contemplating leaving a job at which I've been employed for 16 years. I am considering a new job in new field (construction). Because this position would entail a lay off for the winter, (which would be approx. 3 months from now) would I be eligilble to collect unemployment once I am laid off?

If you voluntarily resign you cannot collect unemployment.
