Legal Question in Employment Law in New York

defemation of character

i worked for a company who suspended me, they said thAT one of the patients had a something illegally charged to his/her credit card they said that on the computer where that i worked from they found something in the COOKIES with the same info for which her card was charged. The computer that I worked from was not on any security settings so any one had access to the computer and i explained that to them and they agreed, however I decided not to return when they asked, I never heard anything of it in 6 years, no charges were ever filed or anything I think I was set up by someone in the workplace, however 6 years later Im applying for a Federal Government job and they have ruined my chances by saying i was fired for credit card fraud, I think if this were true some charges should've been pressed, and not to mention in 2003 i went back to this clinic on several occasions with my newborn for his well visits. what can i do for them saying these awful lies and defaming my character and causing me a job?

Re: defemation of character

If your past employer told the government you were fired for "credit card fraud" and you were not charged with or sued for that, yes, you have a cause of action for slander against your ex-employer. It must be a clear

statement, about you, that can be shown to be false.
