Legal Question in Employment Law in New York
Employee privacy rights
We recently received an email from human resources stating that they will be taking everyone's picture and will be posting the pictures on the company's intranet with the firms telephone listings and that the pictures were mandatory. Is this legal and can we refuse to have our pictures posted. Is there a particular law that I can bring to their attention since I feel this is an invasion of my personal privacy- the name & telephone number I understand but not the picture. Thank you.

Re: Employee privacy rights
The only law I am aware of in connection with this issue is NY Civil Rights Law Sec. 51, which says they can't use your picture without your written permission for a commercial purpose. I doubt that them asking you to have your picture in a company directory is actionable, but maybe.
