Legal Question in Employment Law in New York

Can former employer pass negative information to current employer?

In March of 2001, my employment was terminated with the company I used to work for. It was a small, father & son business and I reported directly to the son. I recently learned that this person (the son) has been conveying very negative, and false information about me to people that I currently work with. This information has reached my current supervisors, and I have had to defend myself against false accusations. I am afraid that this will negativly affect my current employment situation. Do I have any legal recourse?

Thank you very much.

Yes, there could be slander action against your former employer. Did you sign a separation agreement that contained a non-disparagement clause? I can be reached at (212) 867-4753.

Even if you did not sign a non-disparagment agreement, you can still bring an action for slander and defamation.
