Legal Question in Employment Law in New York
Can my employer terminate me after I resign?
My part-time employer began requiring a number of additional duties other than the ones we had agreed to upon hiring, which required more time than I could devote. I notified that I would not be able to fulfill those duties and resigned, in writing. I now get a letter stating I was terminated three days before my resignation, which wasn't true. The letter is dated three weeks later. Can they do that?
The letter also states that I cannot have any contact with any co-workers, or former adult students or ''the proper authorities will be contacted''. Can they legally stop me from responding to contact from former students (all adults) or co-workers? I had no employment contract.

Re: Can my employer terminate me after I resign?
The letter has no legal effect as long as they pay you for th etime you actually worked. They cannot prevent you from speaking to people outside of the workplace provided that you do not pass along any proprietary secrets. I cannot imagine what "proper authority" they could possibly conceive of contacting.
