can my boss just reduice my pay lower the my origianl contract salery from 1997. I am in NYS. They didn't say i had to take it or be fired. They send they need to do this comapny wide tro help support the company. I am also geteting a higher reduction 33% as opposed to other (12%). The susposed excuse for this is to bring everyon to the same pay level. They are also saying hopefully this is only short term, but they are not being specific enough. What are my options? they never said take it or we have to fire you, so i believe they are hoping i quit so they wouldn't have to pay me unemployment. i am a single mother with 2 school age children and a mortgage. this 33% decrease will bankrupt me. What are my rights? Thank you for all your help.

Generally, an employer may reduce your salary for any non-discriminatory or retaliatory reason, including budgetary concerns.
An exception to this might be if you had a contract stating otherwise. You mentioned a 'contract salary' from 1997, but didn't specify what you meant.
