Legal Question in Employment Law in New York

Employment Offer

Is an employer required to make an offer to an employee in writing or is this just good practice. If it is required can you tell me where I can find this written?

Re: Employment Offer

I know of no law that requires an offer of employment to be in writing. In most cases, however, I advise my clients to request that offers be memorialized in writing -- for legal reasons, clarity and for leverage to negotiate a promotion or pay raise in one's current position. For the latter reason, some employers are hesitant to put things in writing.

When in doubt, consult with legal counsel on this very important and delicate issue.
