Legal Question in Employment Law in New York

Employment Verification From Former Employer

Does a former employer have to verify your dates of employment? When a prospective employer checked with them, he was told that they ''don't give out any information'' and would not even verify my start and end dates. Is this action appropriate? Thanks very much.

A former employer has no obligation to provide any information regarding your employment except under a judicially ordered subpoena.
