Employment Verification

When a potential employer calls a previous employer for employment verification purposes, what other info is the previous employer legally allowed to give about the ex- employee?

This is a very general question which I would normally provide a general answer too; but the whole field of employment has become such a minefield, that even the most ordinary things require that one exercise a higher degree of care.

Stay away from any areas that are

"protected" classifications unless they have direct bearing upon the job.

You may not provide info about worker's comp claims and the like.
