I was fired 12/2009 for (cause-time of leave) after reporting an assault by a Managing Director to HR. No severance and 2 days before major surgery noted to my boss-precancer. Do I have any legal recourse, or has the time run out? They are a very powerful co.

Why have you waited 2+ years to take any action? From a judicial standpoint, it reflects poorly on your credibility and makes it difficult for witnesses to accurately recall the events that transpired. In all likelihood, your severance pay was conditioned upon you freely waiving your legal right to sue.
For others reading this, always contact a severance attorney immediately upon being notified of termination if you believe you were illegally terminated or feel the severance payment is unfair.
