Legal Question in Employment Law in New York
I was fired from my job for activities taking place after work hours and off work properties, is this an acceptable reason for termination?

Your termination may be justified if there is a rational relationship between your outside activity and your employment. Here is an example: if you work for a bank and you are charged and convicted of theft outside of the bank then it is unlikely that you could bonded (insurance against theft). The bank will then terminate your employment because you cannot be bonded. Likewise, an elementary school teacher convicted of harming a child while not working will be terminated because there is a rational relationship between his harming a child and whether he can be trusted with the safety of other children.
