Legal Question in Employment Law in New York

I was fired from a job at Babbitt Bearings Corp. in 2008. I lost my job from veterans hospital in may 2009, i was forced to resign due to not disclosing i was fired from Babbittt bearings. The background was sent babbitt bearings and they released my private information that i was fired. I thought there was a federal law that companies could only say the dates worked and that you no longer work for them, and no other information is allowed. I would like to know if i can sue babbitt bearings for damaging my charactor and my name.No company will hire me, except ups christmas help, Dec 24 i will have no income to pay my house, gas and electric and water bills. I have a 14 month baby in house, along with 6 other people in house.

There is no federal law as you described in your question. The application that you signed from your second employer in all probability contains a release of information authorization to disclose information. Perhaps your only recourse is if the information on your termination is false. Good luck.
