Legal Question in Employment Law in New York

forced to sign

I work as a doorman in a residental building and am a member in the union. Recently I was asked by my building manager to sign a memo stating use of cell phones on the job. When confronted by him on my refusel to sign,I informed him that I did sign a memo regarding cell phone use in the past(which i produced to him), and why am i obligated to sign another one?

His response was, ''you must do as i tell you,and sign''. my question to you is since I'm a contract employee under the collective barginning agreement and not an ''at will employee'' do i have to sign anything, because he asks me to? my union rep who was present at the meeting tells me yes I MUST sign and won't give me a straight answer on the legality of signing.PLEASE HELP!!

Re: forced to sign

If I understand you, the memo said use of cell phones was prohibited, and the super wanted you to execute the acknowledgement. It is possible that the CBA is being renegotiated or has been, and that a group of members is making an issue over cell phone usage on the job. What you need to find out from the union rep is whether this is required by the CBA, or if something else is going on. I cannot tell from the info provided.
