Legal Question in Employment Law in New York

forced out?

I just transferred with my company to NYC. This is the 2nd week I've been in NYC, but I'm doing the same job here as I was in Denver. There is an internal job-opening list that goes out every week. I've applied for a position from that list with a sister company. I was told by my current boss and HR rep that I basically don't have a job here if I continue to peruse this opportunity with the sister company. I never signed an agreement as to how long I would stay. They told me to go home for the weekend and think about what I want to do. My choices are to stay with the current company and give 100% and not bring up the subject of a transfer again for at least 5 months, or to peruse the other job and know that my current boss will have a very frank conversation with the hiring manager at the sister company and then not expect to have a job here. So I feel like I'm screwed and being forced to stay. Is it legal for them to tell me this?

Re: forced out?

Yes.

This is an internal political issue. If people sufficiently high up in the sister company really want to hire you, nothing your current boss says will make a difference. On the other hand, nothing would stop your current employer from firing you on the spot for any or no reason.

This is not a legal issue. Weigh the risks and rewards and act accordingly.
