Legal Question in Employment Law in New York

job title change

I am on maternity leave and have just been informed that the department is re-organizing and my job title is changing. The timing of this change is during my job-protected leave (6 months) but beyond the paid portion of my leave (8 weeks). Arguably the title is of lesser status than my previous title, although the company claims to have retained, with some alteration, the ''area'' of my focus. Can my title be essentially demoted while I am on leave? Others in the dept have received title changes so I am not the only one. Can the focus of my job be changed while I am on leave? Although the gyst is supposedly the same, the group to which I have been assigned seems to have a more narrow focus than what I had before.

Re: job title change

What your company is doing is questionable and I would really need to know more facts before giving any advice. The bigger question is whether your pay is being cut and whether you would rather come back to a lower position with lower pay or have an attorney negotiate a severance package for you.
