''lying boss''

i had a seasonal job with a private club.i was told that i would be laid off after seven months. i was laid off or let go after seven months.i applied for unemployment insurance and i received three checks.the unemployment dept called my last employer and asked if i was eligable for umemployment and he told them i quit when i was laid off and stopped the checks;which was my only income at the time.can i sue and what can i sue for?

I received your question on 4/2/2001. My initial comments, which are provided for informational purposes only, are as follows:

Under New York law, you have the right to request a hearing within twenty days of receipt of the notice that your unemployment benefits have been terminated. The notice that you received should indicate that you have this right. At the hearing, you will have the opportunity to testify before an administrative law judge who will then make a determination as to whether your benefits were properly terminated. Presumably, he will base this determination in part on his weighing the relative credibility of your story against the credibility of your former boss.
