I am planning on leaving my current position to a position in my career field. Is it required to give a two week notice or just courteous professionalism?

Unless you signed a contract requiring you to do so, legally, you can leave with a one day notice. However, it is strongly recommended you provide a two week notice. Indeed, unless you plan to stay at the new employer until you retire, you will need to disclose your current position and employer. Of course, they can provide a negative reference based upon your short notice. Even if they provide a good report regarding your work ability, the added disclosure of your failure to provide sufficient notice may cost you a job.
