Legal Question in Employment Law in New York

Previous employer falsely accused employee of wrongdoing, tells current employer

A previous employer falsely accused me of wrongdoing to my current employer and I was fired from my current employment because of this. The previous employer never accused me directly, discussed it with me, presented any evidence, charged me with any crime. The wrongdoing supposedly occured after I left for a better job. Do I have a case for defamation, libel/slander against the previous employer?

It depends...how long ago did it happen? Is there any truth to what the former employer said to the new employer? You haven't given enough information for me to give a more definitive answer.
