Legal Question in Employment Law in New York

I recently was laid off at my previous employer due to past misdemanor charges from 2006 that came up after I been working there since Jan 27 2011. My qst is can the company fire you after you been officialy hired, due to receiving your background information 3 weeks later, without any notification? And what if the company owes you pay for days that you worked?
