Legal Question in Employment Law in New York
I recently left a company and was provided several boxes to ship personal belongings from my office. When the boxes arrived at my house, I noticed that they were all very carefully opened and searched. The tape was then re-applied so as to hide the fact that they were searched. I have no problem with a search, but it bothers me that it was done in such a deceitful manner. Are they allowed to secretly search my personal belongings?

It's no secret: an employer is allowed to search (within reason) all packages leaving their premises.
