Legal Question in Employment Law in New York

Revealing Nature of Firing

I was fired without any warning after working for a company for two weeks because of a 50 cent discount given by accident. I am not writing about the firing, however an employee came in who did not know about me being fired and employees revealed to them exactly why I had been fired. In essence they reported I had stolen from the company. The only way they could have known about this is if it was reported to them by another store manager or the district manager. Also, the husband of the employee is a manager at the place of employment that I am trying to get my old job back and he was right there with her listening to the whole thing. I was under the impression it was illegal for a company to reveal why someone was fired from a position. Do I have any legal recourse? Thank You very much...

Re: Revealing Nature of Firing

It is bad business practice to divulge that information, but it is not illegal. If it is untrue, you can sue them for defamation.

Good Luck.
