I am getting a severance package in October how can I lessen the tax burden

That's a great question and one that you don't see too much guidance on. As The Severance Attorney, I can tell you that I always try to avoid a lump sum payment and get the payments as either a continuation of employment payroll checks or payable in installments that hopefully incur two tax years to lessen the burden. Other (and more obvious solutions) would include creating a SEP IRA account (if qualified) and investing a percentage of the payment into a new business as a deductible expense.
