Can you be terminated from a company for turning down a promotion?

Generally, New York is an "at will" state. So, your employer can terminate you for any reason except an illegal reason (i.e., you cannot be fired because you are black, a woman, etc.). Also, if you have a written employment contract or are part of a union with a collective bargaining agreement, there may be restrictions on termination.
