Legal Question in Employment Law in New York

Termination

I was terminated after 3 weeks of employment. Never was a trial basis stated when I was hired. I was told it wasn't working out because I didn't fit the personal mold of the company. I was too corporate. I was told that a mistake was made due to the fact that the person above me decided to do my job as well as hers. She stated my work ethic is above theirs and they are more casual. Also, that it was no fault of my own that the three weeks I spend there I proved to be a wonderful manager. Am I not entitled to some compensation? I turned down many offers for this job. What are my rights?

Re: Termination

NY is an "at will" jurisdiction, where -- absent an agreement to the contrary -- an employee can be fired for no reason at all. However, there are exceptions, like for racial discrimination, etc. Also, if the agreement by which you were hired was for a specific term, like "one year", and you gave up another good job to take this, there might be a claim. But generally speaking, NY is pretty rough place for employees at will, who usually have almost no rights. Hopefully some day that will change....
