Legal Question in Employment Law in New York

Can I be told the reason I will not get a job is a past felony conviction

I went to a temp agency for work, I went on an interview and they wanted to do a background check. I informed them that I had a felony conviction in 1983 and they said they would send it to the intermediate company to do the check.

The temp agency called and said the intermediate company

was not going to do the check because the mother company

would not hire me with a felony conviction.
