Legal Question in Employment Law in New York

I took an UNPAID personal day for an urgent family emergency. Is my employer allowed to ask for documentation regarding my personal day?? An I allowed to decline giving the documentation?? Is my employer allowed to suspend me in "retaliation" because I didn't give documentation? I work in NY. I don't have a union. I don't have a contract - I work for hourly wage. And there is nothing in my employee handbook regarding UNPAID personal days. It only states after 3 years you are entitled to 15 hours paid personal time. I have not been there that long. My employer told me "I don't get any personal days". Thank you.

Unless you have a contract you are considered an "at will" employee who may be legally discharged at the end of any pay period. The exception is that you cannot be discriminated against for issues such as religion, race, etc.
