Legal Question in Employment Law in New York

Waiver against filing a a lawsuit

One day, I was joking around at work, and said something about suing the company I work for. The other employee told me I couldn't do that, because I had signed a waiver preventing me from doing so. I don't recall doing so, but I never thought I needed to consult a lawyer to fill out a job application. When this came up in a conversation, a friend told me that this is illegal in New York, that an employer cannot make an employee sign away their right to sue. Who is correct in this case?
