Legal Question in Employment Law in New York
I work at a hotel that contains 100 rooms and employs 20-25 people. For Christmas, our Executive Housekeeper was unable to decide which housekeepers would have the day off, so she scheduled all nine of them to come in for two hours (she took the day off, of course). My question regards whether there is a minimum amount of time for which an employee must be scheduled. Can my employer require that I wake up, shower, get dressed, drive to work, punch in, and put on my uniform for a fifteen minute shift? An hour? Is there anything which requires him to pay me (more specifically, our nine housekeepers) for a minimum number of hours if we've been put on the schedule and told that we won't be working for more than two hours? Some of these housekeepers need to find and pay for child care, take public transportation, or commute 20 minutes or more. Can they legally be required to work shifts for which they will actually lose money? Thank you for your help.
