Legal Question in Employment Law in New York

Work without pay

Currently because of the economy my employer is requiring that everyone take 1 day off as vacation or unpaid time each 2 week pay period. Friday they announced that we are now going to be required to take a second day as vacation or unpaid time during the pay period but they want us to report to work on that day or in other words work on a vacation day or work and not get paid. Is this legal in NY state?
