Legal Question in Employment Law in New York

I work at a restaurant where the wine list is in an ipad. We work in groups, last week i worked at a private party with 3 other servers, the ipad was assigned to one of my partners. The ipad was missing at the end of the night. I didnt even know we were assigned an ipad, since we dont usually use the wine list while working private parties. We never signed any contracts regarding the ipad and now they are trying to charge us for a new ipad. Am i responsible to pay for this item? and i'm worried that they will over charger us as to make an example of us. Thanks

They cannot legally dock your pay for a fellow employee's loss of the iPad.
