Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in New York

6 months ago i rented a room in an apartment building signing a lease for a year. At the time my husband was staying with a friend. My husband wants to stay a few nights and/or possibly move in with me. But the landlord says he cant. But on the lease itself which is a legal document it says and I quote "Only the party signing the lease and the spouse and children of that party may use the apartment." What can be done if they refuse him and is my husband legally allowed to stay with me.

Under both the lease and statutory law, your husband is allowed to live with you. The landlord is unable to stop you.

If there continues to be a problem, there are services provided by the City of New York (New York City Commission on Human Rights) that will help you with your problem. You may telephone (212) 306-7450 to schedule an appointment to file a complaint.
