Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in New York

Aggressive landlord

Hi, I recently moved into an apt in which the landlord is very aggressive and annoying. The apt is great except for the fact that he is around a lot. He rings my doorbell a lot, and bangs on the door aggressively out of the blue without any notice to fix something, etc. I also have an eery feeling he has been in the apt when im not home. Also, what is worse is upon entering the apt, he is sure to make me feel like the apt is his not mine in any way. Sometimes i feel bad about this. I am a single woman living alone, and relatives are telling me that is why he thinks he can get away with it.

When i moved in, the locks were barely working and to be honest complete junk. He saw no problem with the locks the way they were. He also couldnt understand why i wanted to put a new lock and a chain lock. Eventually he agreed, after I told him I purchased new good locks. But he snickered about the chain. He had a carpenter friend put the locks on, and he was right there to grab a key. Friends are telling me I should not of given him a key, but that didnt feel right. I am under the impression the landlord must get a key. Is that true? I appreciate your thoughs on this stressful situaiton very much. Many thanks.

Re: Aggressive landlord

It is not necessary to give the landlord a key, unless your lease requires it, so long as you remove the lock or give the landlord a key to the newly installed lock at the end of the lease term.
