Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in New York

Apartment Break-in/Negligent landlord security

I want to sue my landlord for negligent security of my apartment. I am willing to tell details privately. I would like to be compensated for my losses. I do not have much in the way of receipts nor pictures of what was stolen during the break-in because I hadn't spent much time in the place. So, I figure my best bet is a small claims courtand try to get the maximum $5,000 that I can sue for. Please let me know if this is the right way to go about it, and let me know of a complaint form I can use to file for the suit.
