Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in New York
apartment
It's been four years since i moved from my old apartment. Now they tracked us and they want me to pay almos $ 3,000 because my lease didn't expired in about 5 to 6 months later? What should i do. Is not fair!! I find it so unusual.

Statute of limitations for breach of contract is 6 years. Breaking a lease early is the same as breach of contract. Upon breaking a lease, a landlord has the duty to mitigate damages. In other words, he must attempt to release the apartment.
Even if you think a landlord seeking damages is unfair and unusual, if the landlord violated your rights under the lease (ex. did not provide heat), you would not think it unfair or unusual to seek restitution.
