Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in New York

Evicton and order to show cause

I have to be out by May 31 I went to a local lawyer in town but he said i have to wait to go to court to ask for more time(been unable to find an apt) till i get served that seems so last minute. also what is a good arguement besides that i will be homeless(i have no family and no where to go )was on hard times now doing alright but my landlord wont let me stay even if i can pay the back rent. please advise why i cant go to the judge sooner
