Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in New York

I had a friend whom lived in public housing. She rented the apartment for 365.00 monthly. I was just getting out the shelter and had nowhere to take my children. This friend told me she was moving out and i could take the apartment if i paid her 650.00 a month. I took it. Ive been in this apartment for 3 years now with no problems. Now suddenly my house gets raided by the police.(NO CHARGES)Then she says she want us to leave there are too many problems. So i tell her i cant just leave i been giving her everything just to stay there. So she then has eviction papers made up for the end of October. IS there anything i can do about this

I would contact public housing. It seems that you - like your friend - have monetary problems. Public housing may be able to provide you with affordable housing.

I would also appear at the eviction proceeding and request additional time to find affordable housing.

Mike.
